How IRC really works: http://idlerpg.net/

pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-11
I had forgotten about this show and figured it was just some youtube guy with a number in his handle.
"Decode the backdoor" is literally a string of random computer words like "iMac the battery" or "kilobyte the fax." It's the sort of thing I'd imagine you hear if you work at a computer repair shop in Boca Raton.

HankFinch - 2009-11-12 What if we put our hardrive onto CD-ROM? That'll Firewall us and leave them open in real time.
Eaaasy money, let's GO

pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-12 The hacker's forwarding the interface, type faster!
Oh God, it was trap! We're in a collision domain! NOOOO [mushroom cloud]

PurpleXVI - 2009-11-12
Favourited, five-starred. I love you, TV.
|
mouser - 2009-11-12
Thank GOD they had time to take a screenshot.
The only rating I could give to another crappy TV show computer vulgarization would tank this otherwise perfect score.

AltMazter - 2009-11-12 Thank god indeed, he might /kban or even /kline if he hacked the server!
|
AltMazter - 2009-11-12 off course, a wrongly setup client would close the channel on exit...

Oh geez QUICK YOU DRUG DEALERS, hide your important files on the last level of Prince of Persia!
|
Valvados - 2009-11-12
The math genius is played by the guy (David Krumholz) who was Wednesday Addams' crush of sorts in Addams Family Values. His friend the physics professor is played by the guy (Peter MacNiol) who was the musical-writing camp counselor who Wednesday and company ended up roasting on a spit over a fire.
THEY FIGHT CRIME!

pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-12 He was on Freaks and Geeks too, though not as a regular.
|
TeenerTot - 2009-11-12 How could you both neglect his dragon slaying skills?
|
pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-13 He has too many skills to mention. For instance, he has a centuries old hot chocolate recipe that he shares with North Pole visitors.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-11-12
Think of it like hang gliders flying across the sky!
If two hang gliders meet in mid-air and trade packages, or "INSTANT MESSAGES" as hackers like to call them, there's no proof that it ever happened unless someone looks up!
By taking a picture of our screen, or "SCREENSHOT" as hackers like to call them, we are basically looking up at these two hackers as they toss packages at each other from hang gliders!
Trust me, this makes more sense if you know Leet Speak, or "LEET SPEAK" as hackers like to call them!

Syd Midnight - 2009-11-12 I'm assuming the scriptwriters were too egotistical to ask a nearby computer geek for an IRC metaphor, so decided to create their own definition based upon skimming a wikipedia article.

|
pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-13 Writers? From the looks of it they just xerox the Jargon File and make the CG guys pick up the slack.
|
pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-12
I like how they use print screen as a stand-in for tracing a call in terms of last minute drama. Which makes me doubt if tracing a call is really that dramatic.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-12
great YT comment:
thankfully my irc client decodes from leet to proper english in real time. it uses more of the ram gigs but thats good. atleast thats what best buy geek squad told me when i paid them 0 to answer my question.

infinite zest - 2009-11-12
People still use IRC?
|
|
Cube - 2009-11-12 EFNet is for file trading, IRCNet still exists for the original purpose: to crush the spirit and self-esteem of anyone who logs on.
|
|
|
pastorofmuppets - 2009-11-13 IRC is still very popular with programmers. It's weird but the more computer-oriented a person is they more likely they are to be found long-dead tech. It'd be like if race car drivers not only always drove sticks but started their cars with a crank.
|
|
infinite zest - 2009-11-16 I used IRC for years, up until like 2001 or so. Then I just stopped.
|
CornOnTheCabre - 2009-11-25 i use IRC all the time.
I'd say it's still the best, most lightweight chatroom client you can use, which is kind of sad once you think about it.

I only voted this up due to a surprise appearance from Dr. Joel Fleischman.

Because all computers make high-tech sounding noises whenever a window pops up.
|
citrusmirakel - 2009-11-12
So, IRC is a thing that hackers use when they don't want their conversation to be overheard. Let's listen in on their conversation.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2009-11-17
I love technologically unaware (or just apathetic to) plots in media. The strings of random text makes me laugh, like when George Carlin opened his shows stringing together the stupid slang and catch-phrases of the day.

Pirates trade illegal drugs over IRC?
|
Camonk - 2010-01-30
These dirty cops are just gonna use photoshop to put incriminating leet speak into the chat log.
I think they can do that.
|
thebaronsdoctor - 2011-02-14
Huh, that explains all those illegal drugs I keep getting whenever I go on IRC...
