She keeps saying how the bible was written in "different times" about three thousand years ago... and then she keeps repeating how important and great it is. Pick one argument and stick to it, lady!

phalsebob - 2010-02-10

Ann Widicombe is not an actual person, but a greatly detailed Spitting Image puppet- http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/10_02/widdiDM0810_468x631.jp g

Konversekid - 2010-02-10

Passionate Stephen Fry is the best Stephen Fry!

La Loco - 2010-02-10

So why was one of the lizard puppets from fear and loathing interviewing Stephen Fry?

Kieran27 - 2010-02-10

"The ten commandments have underpinned western law for centuries, indeed millennia. What's wrong with that?"

"What's wrong with it is it isn't true, of course."

Bless you Stephen and you little taxi for that. Like so many of her ilk, this lady can't conceive of humans coming to the conclusion "You know, if we allowed people to kill each other indiscriminately, that really would put a crimp on our society." Nope, we need a divine being to step in and say back off, play nice.

Also typical, she ackonwledges there's a lot of distasteful stuff in the bible, but casually dismisses it without any real reason. Hey lady, your god said the Bible is an all or nothing deal. You don't get to pick and choose which bits of it to follow.

Konversekid - 2010-02-10

But if she doesn't pick the part that says you can't pick, she's home free!

IrishWhiskey - 2012-09-17

Yeah, way too often in these discussions even the atheists accept the premise. It's a commonly held totally absurd claim.

Most of the commandments have no relevance to western law or civilization, they're about religious rituals and only worshiping that God. The only two useful ones (don't murder or steal) weren't exactly new concepts. All cultures have them without a 10 Commandments involved. And the ones about not coveting or lying or working on Sunday aren't law and shouldn't be.

wtf japan - 2010-02-10

"Those desert tribes have stored up more misery than any people in the history of this planet, and they're doing it to this day."

I wish he'd tell us who they are specifically so we could do something about them. Also, leave Umbridge alone. She smells a bit, but she's got a heart of gold.

Innocent Bystander - 2010-02-10

Oy vey. She is one annoying muppet.

This makes me kinda intrigued to see the whole thing, just to see what her arguments are. Because I would really like to see some sort of actual debate on this issue (unlike the shouting match we have now).

baumer - 2010-02-10

What arguments do you expect of her? She's in dominating the narrative here to the point of voicing over the interviews, and that's all she's chosen to give you. It's all she can.

It so happens, though, that there is "some sort of actual debate" between these same people on the topic of Catholicism:

http://www.intelligencesquared.com/iq2-video/2009/catholic-chu rch

I don't know what this clip is from, but I assume it's in response to the embarrassment she suffered in the intelligence squared debate.

This is the best that religion can muster. These are its premier advocates. Doesn't that tell you anything?

drcrypt - 2010-02-11

These aren't "the best" that religion can offer. They are the shrillest, loudest and most warrantlessly indignant that religion can offer. There's a huge difference.

Bort - 2010-02-10

"Contains eternal moral truths" vs. "is an exhaustive guide to moral truths". She has to see how she's switching from one to the other as the situation benefits her; I cannot imagine how she could be unaware of it.

And of course, the way religion is practiced can be very different from what is taught, otherwise eating shellfish and wearing polycotton blends would be considered exactly as sinful as homosexuality.

baumer - 2010-02-10

It could be argued that those aren't sins which merit death, and so aren't exactly as sinful. Stick to "picking up sticks on Saturday"; that's instant execution no matter how you try to pretty it up.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-10

I know that the phrase "their blood shall be upon them" does not appear in regards to shellfish, but they are called an abomination more than once. As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to throw it in someone's face that your religion prohibits their sexuality, you'd better not be a fan of cocktail shrimp.

baumer - 2010-02-10

Oh definitely. All I wanted to stress is that there is a long list of silly shit that would get you straight up murdered on the spot, no matter how blended your fabrics or abominable your cocktails. Using phrases like 'exactly as sinful' when what you mean is 'sorta similar in sinfulness' opens you up to criticisms which you might as well deflect from the start by choosing better examples.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-10

Yeah. It's an interesting argument. I don't spend time engaging religious folks, but I could see where it would come in handy if I did :)

IrishWhiskey - 2010-02-10

I'm totally okay with the suggestion that there are valuable lessons to be learned from the Bible, and that the good should be kept while the historically outdated ignored. But you simply cannot simultaneously hold that belief, and that the Bible was written by God and should be obeyed rather than held up to rational analysis.

Her closing lines simultaneously accept that parts of it are outdated, and criticize people who prioritize "modern sensibilities". How can anyone be unaware of that contradiction?

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-10

Being crazy helps.

APE_GOD - 2010-02-10

I...I'm sorry.

It took me some time to compose myself after the the :03 mark.

Chalkdust - 2010-02-11

likewise. I keep watching only the beginning, cracking up at her voice, then a few hours later trying to recreate it mentally, failing, then watching the first couple seconds again and cracking up again.

DerangedGoblin - 2010-02-10

Channel 4 has chosen to block this content in my country.

I'm in fucking England!

Miskimo - 2010-02-10

And you even presented the show!

IrishWhiskey - 2010-09-26

Jolly Good.

StanleyPain - 2010-02-10

One of my favorite arguments against people like this is:
If the Bible really is the word of God, then why isn't more conclusive? Why wouldn't God himself have settled thousands of years of bickering by simply stating something clearly and officially, as opposed to vague, contradicting nonsense that scholars have to debate over for centuries. Is raping your own daughter as a consequence of disobeying you OK or not OK? Because both sides are presented in the bible as OK.

Of course, that usually leads back to the "BUT IT WAS WRITTEN IN OLDEN TIMES!!"

StanleyPain - 2010-02-10

I would also like to add that using the argument that the bible's age somehow excuses the massively fucked up shit inside of it, is the biggest religious cop-out of all time.
This woman's argument is like saying that Mein Kampf has a lot of positive messages in it if you just simply ignoring the pages and pages of massive anti-semitism and railing against the entire world and how all enemies will be destroyed. By that logic, Mein Kampf is a few steps away from being a holy book....filled with religious revelations by a devout, earthy man who took his faith very seriously.

wtf japan - 2010-02-10

Who raped their daughter?

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-10

I'm not sure if it's what SP was referring to, but often when they say "daughter" in the Bible they are often referring to female virgins.

"When the women of Shiloh come out for their dances, rush out from the vineyards, and each of you can take one of them home to be your wife! And when their fathers and brothers come to us in protest, we will tell them, 'Please be understanding. Let them have your daughters, for we didn't find enough wives for them when we destroyed Jabesh-gilead."

Summarizing the OT as "don't kill or steal or mouth off to your folks" is like describing a lynch mob as "people who tie decent knots."

bac - 2010-02-11

"Summarizing the OT as "don't kill or steal or mouth off to your folks" is like describing a lynch mob as "people who tie decent knots."

Hello, quote I hope to not forget.

Also, bwahahahaha.

Cheese - 2010-02-10

But it was 3,000 years ago!

So What? If God is infallible then he should have done it right the first time, for fuck's sake. Was God an adolescent, thus not accountable for allowing the massacre and misery in the old testament?

While I'll conceit that the ten commandments aren't of themselves wholly terrible, I submit a broken clock is right two times a day. Yes, several of these morals (which the Jew's break on nearly every page after, often by God's decree) hold up pretty good. Thou really shouldn't kill or steal, but the morality displayed throughout the stories is ghastly. Don't piss off yer'mum, but rape is ok if you have a few shekels in your pocket.

And yes, her Pythonesque voice caused me to spit all over my keyboard.

Gayperson - 2010-02-10
