Hey, teacher, leave those things alone

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-03-07

All we are is just another sock in the wall.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2010-03-07

Getting a real early Peter Jackson vibe here...

splatterbabble - 2010-03-07

I was feeling a threebrain vibe, personally.

citrusmirakel - 2010-03-08

The teacher looked a lot like a GWAR character to me.

kingarthur - 2010-03-07

What the hell is this from? I must know.

Toenails - 2010-03-07

Old old website Ingredient X. This guy would either do little skits with puppets or cut-out paper animation.

Shit, I could have sworn this and maybe "Live to be Nine" was already on here. 5 stars either way.

delicatessen - 2010-03-07

I had a fraggle as a TA once.

zatojones - 2010-03-07

some people never got over high school

HankFinch - 2010-03-07

I got over high school. And even If I didn't, I could beat up Ryan Landsom now, anyway. Fucking Jerk.

BIlly Mays Here - 2010-03-07

The crossover between people artistic enough to make puppet musicals over the internet and people who hated school seems to be really high. It's almost as if school is geared towards preparing people for soul-crushing clerical work and the service industry rather than fostering creativity and critical thought! :o

Robin Kestrel - 2010-03-07

Really Unhappy Sheep.

notascientist - 2010-03-07

The teacher has a point. You *do* need to learn too follow rules and have discipline and it is basically true that no matter what happens someone will be your boss and the healthiest individuals learn to live under those circumstances.

Whenever I hear this kind of thing from people, I always want to know what alternative they are suggesting. Are kids supposed to just pretend that society doesn't exist? Do whatever they want, with no concern for the fact that when they turn 18 suddenly no one is going to give them a thing if they don't work for it, which usually means working for some bullshit boss? It is true that students need to learn much, much more than just how to follow rules and obey, but my experience is that any student who legitimately has an interest in learning, and wants to develop a deeper understanding of the world around him or her can find those things in even bad schools. The real problem is that our culture doesn't value intellectual pursuits and thought for their own sake. But, if anyone in society is less guilty of that bias, it is probably teachers. They decided to become educators, after all, in a world that treats educators like shit.

Complaining about school is such a two dimensional, cheap, and inaccurate critique of the problems this country has with intellectualism.

Catchy tune, though.

RomancingTrain - 2010-03-07

Maybe if you weren't so pessimistic you could have been a scientist.

Jet Bin Fever - 2010-03-07

These are for you train... these are for you.

aikimoe - 2010-03-07

Sure, you have to follow rules, but the point is that school is filled to overflowing with arbitrary rules based on an authoritarian dynamic. Every week there are news stories from all over the country which clearly illustrate this. If that's what floats your boat, cool. But lots of people, lots of kids, find it hard to learn in that environment.

Pretending that society doesn't exist or that people can do whatever they want without working is a perfect example of a strawman, since no one who criticizes the arbitrary rules and requirements of school argues for this. (It's like when cops get criticized and someone says, "Oh, well, I guess you'd like a world with no cops!")

I was a teacher for several years, and very lucky to work with some amazing ones. But teachers are like everyone else. There are great ones and absolutely abhorrent ones. Most, however, fall in between.

And to suggest that one shouldn't complain about an institution with demonstrable problems is the opposite of intellectualism.

Potrod - 2010-03-07

"Most, however, fall in between."

Right. The creator of this video, however, seems to think that a very specific type of abhorrent teacher is so prevalent that it can sum up an entire 13 years of education or whatever, which is ridiculous.

"The creator of this video, however, seems to think that a very specific type of abhorrent teacher is so prevalent that it can sum up an entire 13 years of education or whatever, which is ridiculous."

Is this guy saying "All teachers are bad in every school?" Is he saying, "I had a bad teacher like this, once, and, God he was horrible?" Is he saying all his teachers were like this? We don't know.

That said, it's undeniably true that awful teachers are one of many serious problems in schools. So are awful parents. But if a teacher made a video of his/her bad experiences with awful parents, that wouldn't me that he/she is saying, "This sums up all the parents I work with."

notascientist - 2010-03-08

aikimoe, I am not saying people shouldn't complain about schools. I am saying that complaints about anything should be discerning and well thought out. This video is a pretty asinine critique of the school system.

aikimoe - 2010-03-08

notascientist, I got the impression you were saying people shouldn't complain about schools because you wrote, "Complaining about school is such a two dimensional, cheap, and inaccurate critique of the problems this country has with intellectualism."

And even though I'm not really a fan of this video (at all), expressing one's feelings about something via art is not the same as writing an essay, so it doesn't require a well-reasoned argument. That's why painting and punk rock works so well. Art is about emotion, not well-thought-out, discerning complaints.

Camonk - 2010-03-07

This is code for "I felt stifled in high school because I don't know anything but nutty puppets"

Potrod - 2010-03-07

Aww, did someone have a mean teacher growing up? At any rate, the voices are annoying and the song is terrible.

fluffy - 2010-03-07

You are annoying and terrible.

Xenocide - 2010-03-07

I want the singing bird to be my teacher. I would listen to him, as he is wise and his head is not a potato.
