For the same reason I hit a fence 20 feet in front of me the first time I tried to ride a motorcycle. Rational thought is hard to come by when you're dealing with impending pain.

The same thing happened to me my first time on a dirtbike. Watching people wipe out their first time on any kind of motorbike is hilarious because I guess the natural human reaction is to gun it rather than brake. Or steer.

When a predator is chasing it's prey, changing direction only gives that predator a chance to catch up. When you think you're gonna die it can be hard to remember that a van is not a predator.
