Funny how quickly we can lose common knowledge. There's a mysterious line in "If I Were a Carpenter": "Would you miss your color box and your soft shoe shining"? That song was from less than 50 years ago and I'm still trying to find someone who can tell me definitively what a "color box" was. Best answer I've heard is that it's a treasure box that you put pretty things in, back in an era when brightly-colored anything was worth holding on to and admiring.
