This is a better parody than I'd remembered, downright Ed Wood-en. In Matinee, the theatre uses every classic 50s gimmick to scare the audience, like buzzers in the seats, people running through the aisles in costumes, etc (thus the scenes where the actors are talking to the camera).
My favorite part of the movie-within-a-movie was the angry mob armed with torches and pitchforks. Why are they there? Because it's a monster movie. There are always angry mobs armed with torches and pitchforks hunting down the monster in a monster movie.
My favorite part of "Matinee" was the scene with the girl refusing to participate in the air raid drill.
I had never seen "Mant" as a stand-alone film before. I found that part about nuclear weapons "taking all the shoe salesmen and dirt farmers and housewives all over the world and making them into somebody's enemy" was shockingly poignant and somewhat tragic. I wish they would have worked it into "Matinee" somehow.
