Caminante Nocturno - 2010-09-06

I was at this concert. I called in a favor from one of the promoters and got to meet with Miku afterward. We went to Nihonryori RyuGin for a private dinner. One thing lead to another, and the next thing I know we were in Miku's private jet to Monaco. I don't know how long we spent smoking weed and playing poker with Jean Reno and some femmy prince from I-Don't-Know-Where, but it ended with Miku and me having our numbers on each others' speed-dial...

... If you know what I mean.

If any of you guys want to meet with Miku-chan, give me a call. I'll tell you you're an asshole for thinking you're worth her time and hang up.

kingarthur - 2010-09-07

Golf clap.

The Huggable Universe - 2010-09-07

What if I emailed you respectfully stating that I am not worth her time, yet I would be ecstatic if she deigned to speak to me?

What would you do then?

RocketBlender - 2010-09-07

I'm so glad your suspension is over.

Nikon - 2010-09-07

[polite applause]

fluffy - 2010-09-07

Or as live as pre-rendered CG of a synthesized voice playing against a MIDI-sequenced backing track can be.

Cena_mark - 2010-09-07

They have a real band. Funny that its the computer girls getting all the props.

JimL2 - 2010-09-07

[ahem] uh yeah, hi, *I've* got a question.

freedoom - 2010-09-07

I like the rubber hair, it really completes the look.

Nikon - 2010-09-07

This is cool stuff. I am sad I wasn't able to attend this concert while I was in Japan.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-09-07

Gorillaz did it first and better.

RocketBlender - 2010-09-07

I'm more interested in the technology behind this than the concert itself. How do they do it, projectors and fog? And how did Gorillaz do it?

JimL2 - 2010-09-19

They're semi-transparent, and all action happens within a clearly-defined rectangle held between two supporting pylons, upon which the image of the audience's glowsticks is sometimes reflected. (See for example part 2, 2:02.) So I'm guessing they're projecting onto either a screen, large plate glass, or half-silvered mirror. The screen/glass is *probably* angled downwards towards the audience, with the projector beaming either from behind, or up from underneath, which would explain why the whole setup is on top of that riser rather than flush with the stage, and why the tops of the vocaloids' heads are more transparent than their legs.

JimL2 - 2010-09-19

(back-facing polygons)

Adham Nu'man - 2010-09-07

Thank you, Part 1, I got the picture, I don't think I need to meet your friends Part 2 and Part 3. We'll call you if we need you.

pineapplejuicer - 2010-09-07

i just don't know about this. the hyper sexual repression associated with that nation will cause tentacles to enter this augmented reality scenario sooner or later

augias - 2010-09-07

Sexual repression? You guys in the states can't even let a nipple slip on tv without 50 public apologies and 2 million dollars in damages. These people have public masturbation cross dressing super challenges on during primetime.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-09-07

I think he meant "regression"

pineapplejuicer - 2010-09-07

thats very true but we also don't censor our porn or have dating services with girls that wear anime masks...as far as i know

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-09-07

Whatever Japan's problems with sex are, the United States has absolutely no high ground on which to look down on them from.

pineapplejuicer - 2010-09-07

but we have polygamy and child porn and banning gay marriage and all that good stuff. totally sexually enlightened over here.

Squeamish - 2010-09-07

All I know is there was at least one person spanking it in the audience to this, and that makes me feel bad.

Nikon - 2010-09-07

Why? The girls weren't that bad looking.

chumbucket - 2010-09-07

kind of like when people cheer at a Pink Floyd laser light show at the local planetarium...they are basically applauding a projectionist

Squeamish - 2010-09-07

Hey, projectionists deserve love, too.

TeenerTot - 2010-09-07

What is this? What's a vocaloid? Did people pay money to be there? Why don't those kids stay off my lawn? Where am I?

baleen - 2010-09-07

I want an augmented reality grandpa defined by a few settings on my AutoGran software, courtesy of Vocaloid..

Nikon - 2010-09-07

If you guys somehow "acquire" a copy of this concert online, here are two .srt files to go with it. One is the lyrics file in Japanese if you want to sing at home, and the other is an English translation timed to play together with the video:

If you guys somehow "acquire" a copy of this concert online, just email me and I'll send you (TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE) two long needles, which you can use to stab yourselves in the ears.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-09-07

You can live the life of a coward without puncturing your eardrums.

memedumpster - 2010-09-08

When I clicked play, my first thought was "oh god please let these be holograms."

Whew.
