Back then VHS tapes were over 0, nowadays you can get new releases for and people are so entitled they pirate movies because skipping the previews is too much inconvenience for them.

In college I worked at a video store during the last days of VHS, and I can tell you that even as of 2003-4, some VHS copies still cost around 0 to 0 each. Especially if the tapes were out of print. See, video stores are required to buy tapes with special licensing or some such on them, containing certain previews. They aren't the same tapes you get at Wal-Mart. This was theoretically why stores had to pay so damn much for each tape.

It was always a thrill for me when someone lost a tape and they came to the store, expecting to pay around to replace it, and I'd have to tell them they owe 0 for the lost copy of Curly Sue. Then I'd laugh and laugh and laugh.

I believe new release DVD are cheaper for video stores, but still pretty bad. You might still pay - per disc, depending on the movie and the distributor.
