Jeeeeeeesus. "How many of you are showing up and expecting a blessing without doing this? You're wasting your time and God's time."

...jeeeeeesus.

kennydra - 2010-11-27

i voted this up and am rating based on the preview image alone. i don't know if i can even watch this.

but i know its evil.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-11-27

We do gross.

GravidWithHate - 2010-11-27

7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

9Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

-Matthew 7. King James Version.

I love it when these assholes get up and directly contradict the teachings of Jesus.

kamlem - 2010-11-27

I would say there is not a person on Earth that does not contradict the teachings of Jesus.

GravidWithHate - 2010-11-27

Yeah, but I'm not getting up and trying to snooker people out of 20% (When the FUCK did a tithe become 20%?) of their income by invoking his name and supposed divinity, and neither is the vast majority of the rest of humanity.

Bort - 2010-11-27

Gravid: you may or may not have known, but "tithe" is more or less the Old English word for "tenth". So this guy's trying to redefine math.

kamlem: I hate to say it, but that guy's reasons for being ashamed of Jesus are kind of dumb. Half of them involve overly literal readings of the Bible ("look, it says Jesus will have a sword in his mouth!"), and the other half are just kind of weak ("He believed in the Old Testament's stories"). If your goal is to challenge religion, challenge it to live up to the good parts of the Bible, for example the many many many directives about taking care of the poor and not being a slave to Mammon. Either religion will make itself look bad or we get a more compassionate society.

GravidWithHate - 2010-11-27

Bort: Yeah, that's what I was commenting on. I suppose if you're basing your theology on the idea that god demands cash up front, you might as well go balls out.

I was also wondering if this self serving lie is unique to this scumbag, or if it's become one of the many self serving lies in the arsenal of lying evangelical scumbags, sort of like the 'Eye of the Needle Gate' or the Rapture or the idea that Proctor and Gamble is a satanic cult.

Bort - 2010-11-27

Gravid: Speaking at Procter & Gamble, here's an interesting article:

kamlem - 2010-11-27

Wow. Googling this turns up nothing. Is this legal and hence not news?

kingarthur - 2010-11-27

I believe it is legal. Also, churches aren't taxed in America! Yee-haw!

kamlem - 2010-11-27

Oops, searched Google news. Normal Google reveals Examiner.com is on the case... and a few blogs blogs. Really? That's it?

I also love how the youtube version of this video was taken down due to a copyright claim by Fellowship Church, even after he talks about uploading this little speech to youtube in the video.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-11-27

It's not unheard of. Some people use automatic billpay on their bank site to to tithe. They like it because they can miss a week and still tithe.

The church we went to would send us a year's worth of tithe envelopes that said "10%" on the front (not a Church teaching... it's OT) plus an extra set for semimonthly donations to the archdiocese.

Being stupid should cost something. My only objection is that many Americans probably "give" to Walmart churches in lieu of donating to real charities.

Udderdude - 2010-11-27

If you've got them that deluded, might as well go for it. Not like they'll get offended or anything.

Innocent Bystander - 2010-11-27

"God want us to live in a blessed place and be the most effective people out there."

So now God is some kind of motivational coach?

This man is also extremely despicable. How can anyone find this compelling, convincing or spiritual in any way?

cognitivedissonance - 2010-11-27

Read up on the New Thought movement. This has been going on since the 1920s. Originally it was an offshoot of the Christian Socialist movement, which lost credibility after it sponsored Prohibition and took a hard turn to conservatism during the Roosevelt Administration.

This is hardly new.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-11-27

Yup. Automatic tithes aren't new, either. What's great about this is how artfully he delivers the pitch.

I'm surprised he didn't do the usual trick of blending "give, and people will give to you" with "No one has left his house... who will not receive a hundredfold." Televangelists do it so often that a lot of people are convinced that there is a line in the Bible saying that if you tithe you will get paid back in multiples.

Bort - 2010-11-28

So many of these churches are trying to construct a form of Christianity where the defect of compassion is absent. The results aren't pretty.

kingofthenothing - 2010-11-27

In the immortal words of a now-deceased Vietnam Vet that I had great respect and admiration for: "Preachers are nothin' but thieves and communists."

kingofthenothing - 2010-11-27

Also, when's Glenn Beck going to ask his audience to do the same thing?

Rosebeekee - 2010-11-27

Done. I couldn't think of any good tags for this video so suggestions are welcome.

Spoonybard - 2010-11-27

God, this really is evil. "Say it with me!"
Even if you don't fill out the direct withdrawal card, act like you do! So everyone around you will think it isn't completely insane.

Pillager - 2010-11-27

Hackers will have a field day with this...

delicatessen - 2010-11-27

This guy hacks peoples' bank accounts through the word of god. Jesus is his clear powerbook duo.

memedumpster - 2010-11-27

Taxation without transubstantiation.

dead_cat - 2010-11-27

Evil enough.

CharlesSmith - 2010-11-27

You know what? I've been getting pissed off about scams on the behalf of the stupid for most of my life. I think I'm done. If you want to give all your money to this dude, go for it man. It's not like there was a scenario in which you'd use that money for anything useful anyway, so you might as well give it to that guy.

Throw it in a hole and set it on fire so that the spirit of your old car doesn't haunt your garage, make a giant hundred dollar bill out of regular hundred dollar bills and drape it over your house, fucking cover it in butter then eat it.

memedumpster - 2010-11-28

If only they burned money or ate it instead of giving it to right wing politicians so they can destroy the earth.
