Cena's right on one thing though, 2001 IS a long, boring piece of shit with a stupid ending. It's so aggressively boring that I left it playing during the retarded 60s freakout, made a sandwich, ate it, and came back to it still playing. Then I was punished with the ascension into spacefetus. God I hate that movie.

I don't have words in English harsh enough to describe how I feel about people who dislike 2001. Oh, wait, yes I do.

Look I have nothing against artsy movies, but they have their place and time. 2001 was too artsy and vague for its own good. Most the time people just want to see popcorn flicks, but news flash folks, movies are made for entertainment. Condemning people for liking entertaining movies is like condemning people for liking tasty food.

Bigger newsflash: movies are made for whatever the reason the people that made the movie in question wanted to make it. If some want to make movies just to pass time that's great, but it doesn't mean every other director is forced to follow that guideline.

Cena, in a word, the answer is "yes"

Spielberg is one of the greatest film makers ever. He changed the war movie with Private Ryan, he changed the Action film with Raiders. He can make great films in every genre. Why is it that snobs get their jollies bashing Spielberg?

Because Schindler's List is an awful movie that is considered a great movie about the Holocaust by a lot of people, and why that is should be addressed.

And he's not really insulting Spielberg so much, just making an observation about Hollywood films; Spielberg represents the box office. I love Steven Spielberg. I think AI is a seriously underrated movie, but most Americans really have little stomach for failure or even flawed characters, and people like to see people who are sort of like them (comfortable Schindler) do things that they would do if they were living in that uncomfortable piece of history.

Going to the ghetto and teaching Shakespeare, dancing with wolves and saving the indians, being a successful businessman and the Christian savior of the Jews.

I think it's a case of hating on someone for what they inspired--like hating Nirvana because they helped to create Candlebox and Seven Mary Three and whatever.

As for Schindler's List, I think it's technically brilliant enough to overcome any flaws there are in the script (and their are a few--the "group hug" scene near the end is especially unforgivable). I don't see why it's somehow off-limits to make a film about the Holocaust that has a "positive" message. The film also focuses a lot on the technicals of the Final Solution--signing papers, work orders, etc.--which is a very valuable way of showing that the Holocaust was as much an act of bureaucracy as it was of unmitigated evil. Most films about the topic don't show that.

Spielberg lost me when he stopped making childrens' entertainment and tried to go deep; he's good with spectacle but not with message. "Saving Private Ryan" is certainly a breathtaking film, but what was the great message to take from it? Even at the end of the film, Private Ryan doesn't know; all he knows is that he's kind of glad Tom Hanks died for him. I suppose that IS the big message: a vague sense of gratitude for a previous generation.

What else did you want from Private Ryan. The movie delivered awesome action, visuals, and an entertaining story. The message is to respect the people who put all on the line and died for freedom. It doesn't need anything else its a masterpiece.

While I'm all for being grateful to veterans, it hardly requires a movie this big to say. The sentiment actually fits handily on a greeting card.

There are a hundred other messages and themes that a blockbuster movie of this scope could explore. Such as, what are survivors' obligations to the fallen? That would have been a natural for this film, but even at the end, Private Ryan was completely unsure of whether he had "earned it". And Spielberg was fine with leaving it at that. Right there, you see the problem: Spielberg had built something vast and impressive enough that it should contain a lot of ideas, but in the end he really didn't have any to fill it with.

Other options: what are civilians' obligations to soldiers and veterans? (This one speaks to gratitude, incidentally: it's about what we owe our soldiers beyond greeting card platitudes.) Or what happens when you dehumanize the enemy (some number of whom may well be decent folk trapped in hell as much as Tom Hanks is)? Or what do you do when given orders that should not be followed because they are illegal or (unintentionally) suicidal?

I'd say the war movie changed with Full Metal Jacket, not with Saving Private Ryan... but that's just me.

Be nice to the poor indbred hick, he never even knew Nazis were mean or that the Holocaust was bad until Schindler's list came out.

Munich is just ok, the movie still reminds the viewer, again and again, that those terrorists deserved to die. It's more about the movie being about the people in charge of the killings feeling guilty about it. Which by the way, the real mossad agents involved in the real thing said they never had any doubts about the whole mission.

This, once more, it is the fans the ones who end up fucking up things.
