Tonight the wife and I had dinner with a few friends, one of whom is a 90 year old man who was a marine in the 2nd world war. He was one of last people to land on the Omaha beach during D-Day. He described to us the landing, having his boat blown up ( no going back ) and conforting a young soldier who died of gunshot wounds. I asked him about the politics of the time, and why he went to war. He answered indirectly that after witnessing the carnage and death of so many of his friends and fellow soldiers, that the overriding feeling was of disgust that Europe did so little to stop Hitler from growing and amassing power. That had people of good conscience stood up to the right wing fascists that took control of Germany after the economic collapse, that none of the misery and suffering that followed would have occurred. That the whole pointless tragedy was due to people being unable or unwilling to recognize the power that one amoral political demogogue can wield when the political system breaks and a country is in economic straits.
I like this sherriff. He reminds me of my friend.
