pippi thought she could buy the children's love, but as soon as she ran out of candy they turned on her like so many sugared up raccoons that bit at the hands that had no more.

Terrible. The only Pippi Longstocking media I was familar with was that awful Americanized "New Adventures of-" film from the 80's.

What's with the awkward pedo at the beginning?

I have long theorized that Pippi Longstocking is the illegitimate daughter of Willy Wonka, who is the illegitimate son of Mary Poppins, and this scene clinches it. She was adopted by Captain Longstocking, who was also the same slave trader that ferried the Oompa Loompas to Wonka's factory.

Wonka's obsession with candy stems from his mother's insistence on a "Spoonful of Sugar" with every piece of bad news. Pippi, who longs for the sweet embrace of her neglectful true father, must continually play out this little subliminal drama in the vain hope of drawing him out of his black factory abode.

Also, Amelia Bedelia is in there somewhere.
