My beef with Netscape is thus: Barksdale, being a Mississippi native, chose to locate and cultivate talent outside of his home state, the most impoverished in the nation, coincidentally. Massive investments could have been made to homegrow some programming and science talent for a state that desperately desperately needed it.
Granted some people in Mississippi need to learn how to read and write and be effective principals, but why not grow a firm industry (well, at least for a while) that can lift up at least some of the state out of the dregs of poverty? Give the few brains in Mississippi a reason to stay or at least allow those few brains who can't find adequate employment in the state as it is a job that paid well enough to get the fuck out.

Basically, a few companies have realized that the cost of living is dramatically lower in rural areas of the U.S., and that by setting up IT services in these areas they can tap a relatively cheap, English speaking, workforce in the same timezone as their clients.

kingarthur - 2011-02-02 Dude, AT&T's major call center is here, as is the newest Toyota manufacturing plants. Of course we've heard of rural sourcing. It does not, however, do anything to alleviate the economic malaise around here as it only exists to exploit a cheap labor pool.
