It's a very complicated issue that has nothing to do with a provoked threat to the US, it has to do with a transition toward democracy away from, they hope, the military dictatorship that has grown heavily more irate and desperate over the past decade.

Food subsidies have a lot to do with this as well as other inadequacies on the part of the Egyptian government. They've made a lot of stupid mistakes, Mubarak especially, and he has prevented elections from ousting him for years.
