Actually, they could make it even more tragic: Just present it as real. Even people in the era of the moon landings were losing interest in the space program, and rockets to the moon just became routine.
Framing it as a mission where the astronauts showed a little resentment towards a fickle and ignorant public would be perfect.
Hellraiser 4, Jason X, Leprechaun whatever IN SPACE... when horror franchises go to space, it's a sign of going irrelevant.
While not a franchise, I hope this begins the moratorium on fake docu-horror movies.
