In the old days, every web page was just a compilation of some really specific thing, like every midi version of "Candle in the Wind," and if you wanted a midi file of "Candle in the Wind" you had to find the one site. It would show up 10 pages deep into a some Yahoo index, and not on any search engines, so you'd bookmark just in case. Then all your bookmarks were stuff like "The curtain rod photo web ring" and "Jerry's ultimate page of animated gifs of bears dancing Part 21."
Also, the Rich Little joke may have put this one ahead of the Bassomatic.
