IrishWhiskey - 2011-04-30 I could not give a rat's ass whether Trump has the ratings and publicity he wants or not. I don't hate or scorn him in any way, I simply DON'T CARE about him in the slightest, and more than I care about Paris Hilton or who wins the next Real World.
I care about the fact that a plurality of Republicans are so simple-mindedly hateful they could actually take this man and what he's saying seriously. And I care that these people have a significant influence on our actual media and public policies and our lives. And I'd rather try and get people to recognize these people are fundamentally irrational, than worry whether Trump has another penny in his pocket.

first year economics courses teach the fundamentals of protectionist trade policy. it goes like this: a heavy tarrif on imports raises our net exports (exports minus imports). As we begin selling more stuff relative to our reduced imports, demand for our currency to buy our stuff with, goes up. Increased demand for our currency raises our exchange rate, subsequently increasing costs of our own goods for other nations. Thus, we export less, which reduces income and employment. Tariffs are bad for both parties.
Plus, Walmart is probably such a heavy importer of cheap Chinese goods anyways that a 25% tax on Chinese imports would go straight into cost increases at Walmart, hurting every American Walmart shopper. it's just dumb.
