Seems it wasn't so questionable. The guy ran over some cops and was shooting out his car window.

crojo - 2011-06-09

The cops also admitted confiscating phones from bystanders. Which is questionable.

charmlessman - 2011-06-09

Well, yeah. But the shooting seemed legit as far as torrential hails of gunfire go.
I'm among the first to call bullshit on the police when they get in their power, dick-cop mode. But once I read the circumstances, it seemed they followed procedure.

fatatty - 2011-06-09

I would say 20 cops unloading their clips on one guy is questionable. Every extra bullet you shoot increases the chances of innocent bystanders and has less of a chance of helping subdue the assailant (he was probably dead 5 bullets in).

Also the cop pointing his gun at people for taking video is definitely questionable.

But I'm glad the cop killer's dead.

"Every bullet you fire has less of a chance of subduing an assailant..." How do you figure, Columbo?

fatatty - 2011-06-09

Because very few men need more than 5 bullets to be subdued. At that point you're just beating a dead horse and increasing the likelihood of collateral damage.

Not that I expect cops to show restraint on a cop killer but I doubt the police handbook says that you should empty your clip every time you shoot someone.

StanleyPain - 2011-06-09

Maybe this guy did hurt or kill a cop, but it still doesn't fucking justify unloading 5 or 6 weapons into him and endangering everyone around for no fucking reason (3 bystanders were shot according to reports I've read). Also, pointing a gun at someone and demanding their property is called armed robbery. I'd like to see this cop get sentenced the way a black person would in Miami for doing something like that without the virtue of a badge.

It doesn't appear to be that cut-and-dried, charmlessman. Read some more recent articles.

The guy was a drunk driver who refused to stop for police, so a dozen officers fired more than 100 bullets at him as he sped down the street. By the time the video starts, the car has four flats and is stalled and motionless, and the police had already shot the car many times. At least four bystanders and three cops were hit. (If that's proper police procedure, they must have a different one for when white people are involved.)

There's no confirmation yet that the driver was firing out his window; the police couldn't even initially find a gun in the car, but after a few days of searching, one just turned up! (I assume we'll eventually hear whether that gun was fired recently and whether the bullets can be matched to the bystanders'/cops' wounds.)

The police themselves say only one officer was "struck by the car", which could be cop code for "the side view mirror brushed his hand", for all we know.

That is all a long cry from "legit", in my book, sorry.

Like Robin said, the articles I read and posted at poe-n noted that it took the police several days to recover a gun from the car. I'm not one to look for conspiracies, but taken into account with the fact that they purportedly pointed guns at witnesses in order to confiscate their cameras/phones, smashed them on the spot, took this guy back to their HQ to ensure the phone had been destroyed, etc. I don't think anybody can reasonably believe their version of events.

And like Stanley pointed out, they managed to injure civilians with their gunfire yet I've read nothing about the perp--supposedly firing randomly from his car--managing to hit anybody.

Yes, that's exactly how you approach a vehicle bicycle cop.

memedumpster - 2011-06-10

Miami is a lot like Arizona. You should never go there, and you should take every opportunity you can to try and give the place away to any other country that will take it.

Burnov - 2011-06-10

I personally feel so incredibly relieved to know that I'm safe with police officers such as this doing their job. I think I might even cry.

How can we be safe if we have filth sovereigns filming them? What ever would we do without people such as these.

Seriously though, fuck that shit.

Who knows exactly what happened, the resolution and sound of the video are absolute crap, and nauseating camera work that I haven't seen since The Blair Witch Project, or a World Star Hiphop video.

In other words, outside of the hissing, roaring enfilade of gunfire I couldn't tell what the hell was happening.

However I will gladly turn the authoritarian argument on its head and state that if these police felt completely within their judicial rights they wouldn't have any reason to go around smashing cameras for fear of the world seeing what happened.

TeenerTot - 2011-06-10

I don't know about the shootout, but that cop using his gun to confiscate the phone of a bystander is horrific.
