I just watched Old Dark House on a big projector screen. James Whale is so amazing, and you don't get an appreciation for Lon Chaney on a little TV, since he was a silent film actor and his power comes from the way he uses his face.

A monster the tomb cannot engulf!

This wasn't directed by James Whale. For me, who has loved the Universal Frankenstein films since Kindergarten Ghost of Frankenstein is right in the center of the series. The three Karloff films come before it, including the two james whale masterpieces. The three films afterward are lovable trash. (And then there's Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, which is actually pretty good, but a whole different thing.)

The scariest thing about this movie is that the Monster kidnaps a little girl because he wants Frankenstein's second son to put the little girl's brain in his body. Does he want to be close to the little girl, or covet the child's innocence? It never happens, of course, but the very idea is touching and horrifyiing.
