Old_Zircon - 2014-01-20 They're pretty good but I'd take Sun City Girls, Young Marble Giants, Scratch Acid, 80s Butthole surfers and a couple of too-obscure-to-mention private press psych oddities* from the 70s over them any day.
*Fingletoad, Strange and Siho; Parameter - both completely amazing, primitive, home-recorded things that nobody really cares about, mainly since even the reissues floating around number in the low hundreds and the recording quality is abysmal in both cases, and they're not "good" by typical standards, but my god are their albums wonderful.

I provided vocals and keyboards briefly for the current bassist's BJM side project, which is like a post-rock/apocalyptic Spaghetti Western soundtrack to a movie that's never been made. Anton showed up for the CD release show and could barely stand. Courtney Taylor Taylor was there too, and Newcombe was invited on stage to sing for a cover of "Last Dandy on Earth" while Taylor stood in the front just staring.

infinite zest - 2014-01-20 Not really, I couldn't tour with them because I had to work, but they went on tour with BJM (at least the west coast and down to Austin Psych Fest.) Apparently there was a lot of Ayahuasca consumed. Courtney frequents the same bar as I do - it's this Ethiopian place underneath which is a pretty cool lounge called "Langano") his label puts out a couple of my friends' bands (The Upsidedown, 1776) which are worth checking out if you like the Warhols or BJM.

infinite zest - 2014-01-21 It is what it was/is. Cheap beer, bad food, pinball. Kind of like Clinton St. Pub or Yamhill but with free shows so it's a great resource for up-and-coming bands in a city that's crowded with them. Last time I played there my payment was 3 cans of Rainier and nobody bought our tape, and I was just fine with that.

Dinkin Flicka - 2014-01-24 Right, and I'M fine with that; but then I talk to people still there who say: "Downtown is DEAD. Nobody goes there, literally nobody." Three prominent venues with considerable local history went under cuz of that attitude. But a subpar Ethiopian restaurant's enjoying study cred as a music spot... Again, I'm not against it, it's just funny how things go.

infinite zest - 2014-01-24 Yeah.. I used to play at the Paris Theatre because Sayiricon wouldn't let our band play there when we were underage. Now it's a Hentai theatre. Satyricon then became all-ages venue but is now gone for good.. which are the other two?
The downtown scene is still big, but it's slowly becoming what a normal big city's downtown scene is, a far cry from places like The Long Goodbye. Kelly's still books the same groups that usually start at the Langano, so there's always that.

When i watched this movie a few years ago i thought that it was tragic that the band never really broke big because of Antons mental problems. But thinking about it now, it seems pretty obvious that fame would have literally killed him within a year or two.

Last summer I was in Ipswich, MA and someone had sprayed "TAKE ACID AND LISTEN TO BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE" in 4 foot high, hot pink letters on a wall near the train station. Made my whole week.
