You would think the Jews, of all people, might know that hate often hurts the target of the hate more than the hater.

Jews are the true Nazis ... the Ashke-Nazis!

Chautauqua was sort of vaudeville's middle brow cousin. They had a catalog of "enlightening" speakers on topics ranging from politics to liberal arts to classical music. Nearly every middle class family in the late 19th century had a Chautauqua membership. You went to the local theater in the middle of the week (weekends were for vaudeville), you listened to a nice talk by William Jennings Bryan or Samuel Clemens or an explorer of Africa, then they played some nice Strauss waltzes, somebody did a soliloquoy from Shakespeare, people showed some photographs of celebrities in the lobby. There were different circuits for different interests, Jewish Chautauqua obviously being of Jewish interest. There were Chautauquas for temperence, for geography (National Geographic had their own circuit), for classics, etc. If stand up comedy is the 21st century's descendents of vaudeville, TED Talks is the descendent of Chautauqua.

They were converted to special interests groups in the Depression when radio and movies came in and middlebrow theater became financially unsustainable.

I recommend that anyone should visit Chautauqua Institution. It is a private community in Upstate New York.

Bring a flame thrower.
