I took a media preservation course a little while back.
Nitrite film becomes so unstable as it decays that not only is the best archival practice to digitize and destroy the originals, but apparently it's not a good idea to even let on that you have it before digitizing, because in a lot of jurisdictions the fire department can legally seize and destroy it if they find out about it. I hope as much of this gets preserved in 4k as possible, there are only a few years left.
