Is this the plan to mobilize voters for the midterms? Maybe Cheney gave them the idea when Democratic leadership lined up to kiss his ring on 1/6

simon666 - 2022-01-26

Nah. This is the plan to put some pain on a country that needs to take some licks.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

hey I'm as critical as anyone about America but I think we've taken enough licks for now

Enjoy - 2022-01-26

What an embarrassment. Trump would have told Putin he would stick a large nuke up his cornhole and Putin would have respected that.

Biden: "we're going to ask Paypal to deplatform you" probably gives Putin a chuckle.

Meerkat - 2022-01-26

Trump would have asked where the line to lick Putin's cornhole starts.

It's all saber rattling anyway, neither power is interested in mutual destruction.

teethsalad - 2022-01-26

this is easily the dumbest goddamn take i've read today

Nominal - 2023-10-27

Even dumber in hindsight how Trump, and the entirety of the GOP, have bent over backwards and opened up their asscheeks for "the evil empire".

Conservative flip to "two legs better" in support of despots has been as pathetic as it was unsurprising.

decoy - 2022-01-26

Pootie-Poot's put himself in a box. If he fails to go through with it he looks weak.

William Burns - 2022-01-26

There is no possible way for Biden to look weaker to Putin than Trump did. I thought Biden wad supposed to be the one with memory issues, did you guys forget the ENTIRE TRUMP PRESIDENCY?

Two Jar Slave - 2022-01-26

They remembern't.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

why would anyone care about "looking weak to Putin" considering that we are in free-fall collapse right now

teethsalad - 2022-01-26

"free-fall"

do you ever get tired of being such a insufferable drama queen

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

oh yeah I forgot that your team is in charge so you have to pretend that everything is great, we can revisit this in November when I'm sure you'll agree that the sky is falling

Pillager - 2022-01-26

https://www.history.com/news/napoleons-disastrous-invasion-of-russ ia

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

hey a winter invasion of Russia is always a good idea, especially when we are being led by the geniuses in charge right now

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

It wouldn't be an invasion of Russia, it would just be keeping Russia out of Ukraine. Nobody's talking about a march to Moscow.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

yeah just like we were only going into Iraq to get the WMDs, it would be over in 6 months and it would pay for itself!

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

This is COMPLETELY different. This is more like first Gulf War when all we did was run Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. Same thing. Ukraine is Kuwait, Russia is Iraq, Putin is Saddam, and Biden is Bush. We're not looking to depose Putin.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

nah we're looking to occupy a country for a decade or so to generate a few trillion in shady no-bid contracts and also become the main oil supplier for Europe, nothing to do with Putin, he's just the boogeyman

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

You know that's not going to happen. This isn't Afghanistan, this is more like Grenada, and we're going to keep Xi's hands off of Taiwan.

Pillager - 2022-01-26

"Five days or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last longer."

Donald Rumsfeld

Anymore, things have a way of spiraling out of control...

Crackersmack - 2022-01-26

Why wouldn't it be like Afghanistan or Iraq? the people that did those wars are still in charge. and this is mostly about oil too

ashtar. - 2022-01-26

guys no the interim government will we ready to take power any day now and we can withdraw our troops

SolRo - 2022-01-26

It would be more like Syria. Or Libya. Or Yemen. Oh wait, no, America is supporting the totalitarian fascist in that one.

But anyhow, years of proxy war that doesn’t kill any American soldiers, just mass (foreigner) civilian casualties and destruction of major (not American) cities. Mass suffering on the scale a single person cannot comprehend and some fat paydays for CIA contractors.

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

You guys are sounding really silly right now with your Iraq/Afghanistan comparisons. We're not going to establish a new government, we're just keeping Putin out. All we need to do is send a bunch of big strong guys to the Ukraine/Russian border to hiss and spit at those Russians till they go away.

simon666 - 2022-01-27

Why do we need to invade when we can criptial their electronic infrastructure, seize the assets of Putin's supporters/backers and Putin's assets, and probably take off some of their covert assets.

From the left or right, the appropriate response politically and strategically is to put the pain on Russia. Fuck them. And fuck the apologists. Back American existential interests or GTFO.

I'll argue a left-based, flag-waving foreign policy all day long.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-27

lol bro those are all right-wing opinions that you expressed right there

simon666 - 2022-01-27

I reject your supposition that flag-waving nationalism isn't compatible with liberalism.

Your politics reasoning is some convoluted weighing of stereotypes and whether some stereotypical association of a political orientation is or is not like some other stereotype. So when you speak, you just offer phrases against phrases, totally divorced reality.

SolRo - 2022-01-27

A hackathon between the US and Russia will end badly for both nations. And will be taught in history as yet another dumb underestimation of Russian abilities.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-27

nah I completely agree that liberalism is definitely compatible with flag-fucking nationalism, because liberals in America are right wing and have right wing opinions

glasseye - 2022-01-27

Liberalism is a right-wing ideology. Only in this capitalist hellscape do some people mistake it for a left leaning one.

ashtar. - 2022-01-28

Liberalism is absolutely compatible with nationalism: see, for example, the British Empire.

ashtar. - 2022-01-28

Also, you've got to be incurably far up your own ass to think that it is either possible or desirable or useful to out-patriotism the right.

"Surely decorated vet John Kerry will defeat this Yale Cheerleading draft dodger!" lol ok bud

Cena_mark - 2022-01-28

We get commie bashed but without the benefits

Quad9Damage - 2022-01-28

Jesus Christ what has happened to us.

Crackersmack - 2024-03-18

Hey how is that Ukraine war going guys?

Pillager - 2022-01-26

Melchett:
Field Marshal Haig has formulated a brilliant new tactical plan to ensure final victory in the field.

Blackadder:
Ah. Would this brilliant plan involve us climbing out of our trenches and walking very slowly towards the enemy?

Captain Darling:
How could you possibly know that, Blackadder? It's classified information!

Blackadder:
It's the same plan that we used last time and the seventeen times before that.

Melchett:
Exactly! And that is what is so brilliant about it! It will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time! There is, however, one small problem.

Blackadder:
That everyone always gets slaughtered in the first ten seconds.

Melchett:
That's right. And Field Marshal Haig is worried this may be depressing the men a tad. So he's looking for a way to cheer them up.

Blackadder:
Well, his resignation and suicide seems the obvious choice.

Melchett:
Hmm, interesting thought. Make a note of it, Darling.

jfcaron_ca - 2022-01-26

Stars for Blackadder. Most of my internal reasoning about war is based on Blackadder Goes Forth.

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

No one cares about that Rowen Atkinson's non Bean bullshit.

Lef - 2022-01-26

Biden has changed zero military leadership post Trump. Do you understand what that means?

I am looking forward to the short lived Kamala presidency.

Cena_mark - 2022-01-26

That's cause Trump's military brass hated him.

glasseye - 2022-01-27

Ah, so the capitalist-imperialist party is doing more capitalism and imperialism. Big surprise.

Never mind how utterly disastrous their handling of the pandemic has been. Almost 900k dead at home isn't nearly as exciting as the possibility of a new war!

Quad9Damage - 2022-01-28

We are all suffering PTSD from this pandemic, in big and small ways. We are divided as a country more than ever. We are hard Left or hard Right. We are pro-get a shot to stop spreading a disease or pro-believe Tom Hanks is a head vampire. Every comment section is 120 pages of infighting and shitposting and memes. Oh hey, look, an obvious liberal. Oh hey, look, an antisemitic refugee from /pol/ spillover.

I didn't watch the video. Oh hey, we're hinging on World War 3.

I'm tired, POE. Can it stop, please? Even for a second?

Cena_mark - 2022-01-28

The left is not a hard left. It's hard right vs milquetoast centrists dems. Don't play the both sides are the same game. It's good decent people vs anti-vax Trumpie buffoons.

ashtar. - 2022-01-28

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

Nominal - 2022-01-29

First past the post does force everyone into 2 camps (or one guaranteed to win camp and a bunch of losers), but enough with the "both sides are radical". One camp is a bunch of cultist brownshirt thugs looking to establish theocratic minority rule, stamp out dissent at all levels, outsourcing Thought Police and acts of stochastic terrorism to private citizens, and other autocratic horrors.

The other camp is a wide range of people trying to stop them.

The very terms Left & Right do a great disservice because it makes everyone thinks politics is scale where "BOTH SIDES!" have to always be balanced, leading to bad faith arguments of the need for bipartisanship and fair play. It's almost enough to make me start preaching the Horseshoe Theory until I remember it's always brought up by Libertarians trying to case themselves as the reasonable middle.

Crackersmack - 2022-01-29

You all are watching the Globetrotters play the Generals and pretending that it's humanity struggling against orcs or something. Bunch of rubes.

I got bad news for you guys; "it's a big club and you ain't in it".
