What would read as hubris by any other culture comes off as quaint in Japan. Why is this?

I'm always stunned how anytime anyone gets on something moving they immediately stop and just stand there. Like the moving walkways at airports. Designed to move people faster but instead they just get up on it and stop.
Unless there's a conveyor belt that takes you there, you can shove your so called "convenience" right up your ass!
To be fair, in Japan that's twice as tall as most people.
