It beats being a Mac zombie.

I'm not usually one to bitch about a new OS, but Windows 8 kind of gets on my nerves. Most of it is getting used to the new layout and procedures, but there are some performance issues that will hopefully be patched.

But Windows really hasn't been the same snce the halcyon days of XP.

Id say that im pretty happy with windows 8 now after having wrestled with the default settings for 6 months. However, the first time i booted it up it took me the better part of an hour to just find the goddamn desktop. I used to spend the first few months with a desktop getting rid of bloatware, now i have to spend the first few months taking off the new safety features so that i do basic things like renaming file extensions.

I've literally never paid money for an Apple product in my life, I'm just saying a new version of Windows isn't always an upgrade. If you want optiumum performance with a modern, solid state hard drive for example, stick with Windows 2000.


Shit, stick with Windows 2000 in general if you can get away with it, it's all downhill in either direction from there, at least in terms of performance and stability. 7 is decent.

I just recently took the plunge and actually committed to buying (rather than piratingg) the new Usine (http://www.sensomusic.com/usine/) which means I'm pretty much committing myself to transitioning over to a multitouch oriented system in the next 12 months, which might mean Windows 8 is actually a reasonable option. Too bad I have to use Pro ools for work and Pro Tools will only support one specific version of Windows 7 because Avid are dicks.

Yes, damn my Apple computer that weighs 3 pounds, runs 7 hours on the battery, has never crashed, and pays all my bills with the work I do on it

Old Zircon - Windows 2000 on modern components? Maybe if all you're doing is word processing, but for modern video cards and modern games, you cannot run Windows 2000.

Also, you can get a Mac with a solid state drive - it's just more expensive than a PC.

There was a time that XP was buggy as hell; it took them two Service Packs to bring XP in line.

I'm pretty happy with Windows 7. Hey, those of you in the know: does UAC actually keep your system any safer? Seems like the logic behind it is sound, but does it actually work?

I am horribly resistant to change and love Windows 7 and therefore I hate Windows 8 every time I encounter it. It probably just takes some getting used to, but I really just want Windows 7 only faster and more secure.

strip out all the metro crap and thats what's left. YMMV.

In Windows 8 -- actually, in just about every Windows -- hit Microsoft-D to get to your Desktop. ("Microsoft" is the key next to your Ctrl key on the left, with the Microsoft logo.)

Then install Classic Shell to get your Start button back, and to make it look like the XP menu system.

7 is my favorite since 2000, and the actual 3rd party performance figures I've seen back that up. Vista is the worst 21st century Windows I've used, but Inever found it nearly as bad as its reputation. Hell, I used a terribly maintained Vista laptop without a single major problem for 2 years before I had to upgrade for work. A lot of people have complained about 8 but that happens every time. 7 ran noticeably faster on the same hardware after the update, and I didn't even do a clean install.

Oh, one thing worth knowing is that Windows 7 has a well documented bug that can make audio performance REALLY poor and glitchy when you use the native drivers, although I haven't had much trouble with it lately so maybe a recent update fixed it. ASIO works fine though.

7 is actually pretty darn good. 8 looks terrible, but 8.x may be better.

Still prefer to book into OSX. It took me a while to adjust (had to google how to power down!) but it isn't terrible as long as I'm on the desktop.

I can live with it. It does everything I need. Still pisses me off when I accidentally switch to metro, but the muscle memory is learning.

Metro seems like a total waste. Want Skype in Metro? need a Microsoft apps account. My google email isn't good enough for an account?! Fuck you Ballmer, just downloaded the Windows 7 version.

7 was easier to just "use" but at some point, the new stuff will only work on 8, so may as well bite the bullet. Support will outlive 7, so you'll pay for the upgrade anyway at some point.

Mind you, I switched development to OSX and Linux years ago.. The apps you use will probably make the decision for you.

7 is the best Windows, so get 8 and make it look and act like 7 and you're all set for the next few years.

I suggest you do all your work in symbolic cave paintings.
