Ragtime piano is absolutely charming.

Gmork - 2014-01-05

I just played through bioshock infinite and there was a strange lack of Ragtime. They could have shoehorned it in there somewhere. I don't give a fuck if it's colonial, they already fucked historical continuity in the ass so just throw in some ragtime, dammit!

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-04

Makes sense to me.

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-01-04

What I wanna know is the correlation between being a blind black dude and playing piano. You've got the God of piano, Art Tatum, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Marcus Roberts. Just what the hell is going on?

memedumpster - 2014-01-04

I thought the DSM-5 changed ragtime to harpsichord spectrum disorder?

yogarfield - 2014-01-04

fucking starz

RedRust - 2014-01-04

yes

Bort - 2016-09-24

Oh sure, say funny things, and you expect us to give us your stars.

... Goddammit, it worked.

BHWW - 2014-01-04

Gotta use that Aspie tag
for that old Aspergerrrrrrrrrrr's Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!

Chancho - 2014-01-04

His dick must be sore from all the groupies he's banging.

pastorofmuppets - 2014-01-04

A second-rate Grateful Dead tribute band from my area recently had to replace their keyboardist. His wife made him quit the band after she found out that he was having regular sex with Grateful Dead tribute band groupies.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-05

I'm having a difficult time defining that kind of sexual fetish. I suppose since it involves people pretending that someone is someone else, and costumes are probably involved, it's a musical version of furry?

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-06

Those dudes who run the annual Grateful Dead tribute cruise where I live must be living the life of Riley.

The Mothership - 2014-01-04

catpenis27, are you a lawyer in Boston? Cause if so I think we grew up together.

also this kid is pretty talented.

catpenis27 - 2014-01-05

I've never been on the east coast.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-04

He isn't that great. He's good, but not great. I was expecting some pretty top fucking notch playing with all that aspie talk.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-05

He went on to perform at Carnegie Hall, so... decent?

pastorofmuppets - 2014-01-04

Anyone know the piece? If this is Scott Joplin I'll eat my straw boater.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-05

The description says "On a Circular Staircase" by Glenn Rowell / Gene Carroll and "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin. So you'd have to watch the whole thing to get your Joplin on.

gravelstudios - 2014-01-05

It's a pretty heavily 'arranged' version of Maple Leaf at that. This kid is better than me, but I suck, so yeah.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-05

This kid is also better than me, but I bet I could beat him up, so nuts to him anyway.

pastorofmuppets - 2014-01-06

Whoops, I only watched the first half, and am bad at internet.

I can play a few (Pine Apple, Maple Leaf, Elite Syncopation, Easy Winners) but just by sticking to the sheet, except for maybe changing octaves on the repeats and similar cheap-o variations.

Love that frilly / art tatumy thing at 3:31.

All in all, pretty good... FOR A WHITE DUDE

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-01-05

Its time that I need a rag!

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2019-01-04

wtf? I dont even know that this means.. I must've been in a weird mood..
Anyway
Ragtime is math

boner - 2014-01-05

I like that kids are attracted to turn of the century whorehouse music.

pastorofmuppets - 2014-01-06

thanks to mario, yes

gravelstudios - 2014-01-05

I used to teach piano lessons to three siblings, a girl and two boys. I'm absolutely certain than the two boys had undiagnosed autism, especially the older boy, who had almost no interest in playing actual music, but he would practice Hanon exercises for hours and hours. It's all he wanted to play.

catpenis27 - 2014-01-05

I hated hanon.

gravelstudios - 2014-01-05

He tended to gravitate toward activities that were extremely repetitive, rather technical, and not too difficult once you got the pattern down (he tended to quit anything that he couldn't do after a couple of attempts). This was in all aspects of his life, not just piano, but with piano, it manifested as an obsession with hanon exercises. The younger boy just hated piano altogether. The only reason they were taking lessons at all is because their mother was dying of cancer, and one of her last wishes was for them to learn to play. She'd sit in her chair and listen, each week growing weaker and more confused. Their dad spent all his time online, chatting with his mail-order bride in the Philippines, who he married within a few months of their mom finally dying. It was a very messed up situation, and I finally just quit because I was overwhelmed by it. I guess that was a long answer to a short comment.

boner - 2014-01-05

AMAZING.

catpenis27 - 2014-01-05

Wow. My main instrument is accordion to be honest, then my teacher died and I kind of taught myself a bit of piano. I've always been more of a performer than a student so to speak. I play a lot of ragtime piano, I can play Maple Leaf Rag on accordion, always kind of hated Mozart though, love Jelly Roll Morton.

But yeah, I've known a lot of people who were forced to choose an instrument or something, and wind up hating it and never actually learning music. I begged my mom for accordion lessons at like 9 years old, I didn't start till I was about 12 because she thought I was insane. Hanon exercises sucked though, I could do them well and found them arbitrary versus actually learning a song.

gravelstudios - 2014-01-06

I played a little accordion in college, including a solo in a marching band show, but just couldn't wrap my head around it. I didn't practice much and quit because I had to focus on stuff that would actually help me graduate. I taught myself piano in high school, and took a few lessons in college, but I'm not classically trained by any stretch. All I play is church music (for money), ragtime (for fun), and my own pop songs (for convenience). Oh, bonus points: I played at their mom's funeral.

Enjoy - 2014-01-05

I like to imagine aspies have a ragtime sound track playing in their head at all times.

Gmork - 2014-01-05

The awkward nervous leg movements of autism perfectly transforms him into a beat-keeping, light-touch, trill-master of the ragtime piano style. I swear, without those leg movements you can't even play ragtime.

Gmork - 2014-01-05

IE this would sound very different if he wasn't so experienced with the pedals

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-05

ANY piano piece would sound different if the player wasn't so experienced with the pedals.

Protip: Flute music sounds really different when played by asthmatics.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-05

Where's HarrietTubman to rag on all of us for some arbitrary reason???
