I just played through bioshock infinite and there was a strange lack of Ragtime. They could have shoehorned it in there somewhere. I don't give a fuck if it's colonial, they already fucked historical continuity in the ass so just throw in some ragtime, dammit!

A second-rate Grateful Dead tribute band from my area recently had to replace their keyboardist. His wife made him quit the band after she found out that he was having regular sex with Grateful Dead tribute band groupies.

It's a pretty heavily 'arranged' version of Maple Leaf at that. This kid is better than me, but I suck, so yeah.

I can play a few (Pine Apple, Maple Leaf, Elite Syncopation, Easy Winners) but just by sticking to the sheet, except for maybe changing octaves on the repeats and similar cheap-o variations.

I hated hanon.

He tended to gravitate toward activities that were extremely repetitive, rather technical, and not too difficult once you got the pattern down (he tended to quit anything that he couldn't do after a couple of attempts). This was in all aspects of his life, not just piano, but with piano, it manifested as an obsession with hanon exercises. The younger boy just hated piano altogether. The only reason they were taking lessons at all is because their mother was dying of cancer, and one of her last wishes was for them to learn to play. She'd sit in her chair and listen, each week growing weaker and more confused. Their dad spent all his time online, chatting with his mail-order bride in the Philippines, who he married within a few months of their mom finally dying. It was a very messed up situation, and I finally just quit because I was overwhelmed by it. I guess that was a long answer to a short comment.

Wow. My main instrument is accordion to be honest, then my teacher died and I kind of taught myself a bit of piano. I've always been more of a performer than a student so to speak. I play a lot of ragtime piano, I can play Maple Leaf Rag on accordion, always kind of hated Mozart though, love Jelly Roll Morton.

But yeah, I've known a lot of people who were forced to choose an instrument or something, and wind up hating it and never actually learning music. I begged my mom for accordion lessons at like 9 years old, I didn't start till I was about 12 because she thought I was insane. Hanon exercises sucked though, I could do them well and found them arbitrary versus actually learning a song.

I played a little accordion in college, including a solo in a marching band show, but just couldn't wrap my head around it. I didn't practice much and quit because I had to focus on stuff that would actually help me graduate. I taught myself piano in high school, and took a few lessons in college, but I'm not classically trained by any stretch. All I play is church music (for money), ragtime (for fun), and my own pop songs (for convenience). Oh, bonus points: I played at their mom's funeral.
