The town I live in still uses one of these things to summon the volunteer fire dept, even at 2 in the morning, as opposed to calling them on their cell phones like it's the 21st century.

animegurl1000 - 2014-07-04 For three years I lived a few doors down from one of these things:

Never ceased to scare the bejeezus out of me every time there was a tornado warning. Again, in the age of Internet and phones that automatically display weather warnings, tornado sirens seem kind of unnecessary.

gravelstudios - 2014-07-04 I think where I live, it's just a tradition thing. They keep it because they've always had it and a few misguided (old, senile) souls would miss it if it were gone. At least I live across town from it, but it's still loud enough to wake me up if I'm not sleeping too deeply. I used to know a guy who lived right up the street from the FD, and he really hated that thing. People who are new to the area often think it's a tornado siren and freak out when they first hear it, until a local tells them it's just another burning trailer.
