'Energy' must be one of the most misused words among crackpots.
|
Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-04-12 I once lived with this spainish guy (who was lovely at first but then turned into a giant asshole with a vendetta against me) who was into martial arts and truly believed that master martial artists could levitate and so forth. His explanation was pretty much.. "energy". He was not the sharpest tool in the shed.

YouTube:
"Love this video. Only caveat I have concerns people with ElectroSensitivity. ... Keep in mind too that the longer the earthing cable the more likely it is to pick up unwanted radio waves. "
"I think this video isn't bringing the message of Earthing across right. The reason why earthing is so important is due to the fact that we are too statically charged due to the constant energy fields of home appliances that surround us."
To be fair, two of the 45 comments mention pseudoscience or the placebo effect. The remaining 43 have dryad spirits dancing around their unwashed assholes.
Do you think the guy behind it, Martin Zucker, is preying on these idiots, or do you think he himself believes it? By appearances, he's making a killing: http://www.earthing.com/

FatFatuousNation - 2015-04-12 There is a cardiologist affiliated with these claims, Stephen T. Sinatra. The fucker sells "nutritional supplements," as well, of course. Do you think it would be possible to get his medical license revoked, if we make a stink? He's licensed in Connecticut: http://goo.gl/S5AYDN

The book that inspired all this crap is great. I thumbed through it at work when I stumbled across it organizing the new age stuff.
Basically, the thesis is: mankind was much happier and filled with quantum majykal mystikalness when he wore no shoes or flimsy shoes and touched the ground often and slept near or on the ground. So...instead of doing THAT, you need to buy these expensive, specially made rubber mats that are TOTALLY NOT the same thing as average yoga mats to make sure that the power of mother nature properly flows into you.

Wow, I guess that anti-static mat that I have on my desk at all times to prevent me from zapping electronics is actually a taxable benefit from my employer!

|
Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-04-12 Last time I worked in IT the practice of using mats and wrist straps hooked up to a sockets earth was no longer practised as if the if the building had any faulty wiring or other issues with devices on the circuit there could be stray voltages on the earth.
|
Oscar Wildcat - 2015-04-12 Thing is, unless you're standing a few inches deep in salt water, you're not going to be well grounded. Shoes or no, the coupling will be largely capacitive. The earth's charge is static, and amounts to about one hundred volts per meter. So no, you'll not come into equilibrium with the earths charge. As if that would have any effect to begin with, but the specific claim fails on the fact that the implementation doesn't achieve the claimed result.

This is satire, right? Even if I believed "woo", I'm wouldn't stick anything into an electrical outlet that isn't a plug, even if it's just the ground line hole.

Well, this video doesn't seem that bad. I mean, they aren't harming a lot of people just by telling them to go outside barefoot once in a WHAT THE FUCK?! COME ON!

Oh Dear God, it's real. I thought for sure this was satire when it got to the point of earthing in doors through your electrical sockets, but no. It's not a joke or satirical in any sense. It's 100% real. Why? Why is this real?

The plug to the outside reminds me of the hole in the vestries of Catholic churches that drops any remaining drops of Eucharistic wine directly into the ground with dignity.
