that certainly looks unnecessarily complex and failure-prone.

I'm sure there weren't billions off tax payer dollars used to helped build this, right?

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

You know Atlanta needs a stadium with a closable roof? Cause Atlantans are the worst sports fans in the country. If they have to get a little hot, cold, or wet they won't attend the games. They probably won't attend anyhow, cause the traffic might be bad, and they don't want to take the train cause there's minorities on it.

Maggot Brain - 2016-08-28

The problem with stadiums is one as old as the Coliseum in Rome; Stadiums by their own design last a really long time and it's kind of hard to get redevelopment funds for something that only needs up keep. Fortunately for the owners of our modern American Football teams they have electronic gimmicks they can push on the people, like a jumbo-tron that's too big or a roof that looks like the V'ger orifice.

fitting building to house the shit the Falcons regularly trot onto the field

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

Don't talk bad about my Falcons. They're going ALL the way this year.

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

... Then again I live in New York now. Maybe being a Giants fan could be cool, they've won Superbowls, which sounds kinda nice.

memedumpster - 2016-08-28

If you're a fan of a team because of their success, you're doing it wrong.

*Jets fan*

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

Cena, now that you're local, you need to be a Redsox fan.

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

Homer, New Yorkers don't become Red Socks fans. That's for people who live in New England.
Meme, it's not just the success. I live closer to where the Giants play so it just makes sense to become a Giants fan.

Holy shit. I came across this article when trying to read about the new stadium, and I've never come across such a frank, ruthless, and yet honest take down of Atlanta. I'm starting to realize I wasted so much of my life there. Thank you Coast Guard for delivering me from that cultural desert.
Having been a bouncer in Buckhead bars, this comment really hits home.

It is a city full of people who have settled in life because “it’s cheaper here.” It is a city of people who think culture is a new Chili’s opening up next to the Target in whatever suburb they live in. Atlanta is a giant suburb whose slogan should be “Welp.”

Want to know the life cycle of the average “Atlantan”?

You’re born in a shitty suburb north of the city (Marietta, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, etc). You go to a state school like UGA, Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, etc.You graduate and work in PR or Sales and move to Buckhead. You go to the same bars for 3-5 years until you meet the perfect douchebro/blonde idiot. You get married before you’re thirty, then move out to the suburbs to have some shitty kids and start the cycle all over."

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

No, no, everyone in New York is a Red Sox fan. It's an inside "secret"; only for the locals, the tourists don't know about it.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

I went to Atlanta once.

Humongous insects. Too many Irish people. Would not go again.

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

I always hated Boston teams. I pulled for Giants both times they took down the Pats in the Superbowl. I'm a New Yorker now. GO BIG BLUE! Fuck the Jets and the Pats. I think I'll become a Nets fan and baseball sucks, so whatever on that. I'm not really a hockey fan, but I still got love for the Thrashers.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

But Boston's got a better Philharmonic, and their street art scene is more vibrant and authentic! Plus the microbreweries in Mass kick the crap outta of the microbreweries in New York.

What does New York have, besides Wall Street and fake Rayban sellers?

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

Tons. I haven't discovered it yet. BTW once you've tried a million microbrews they all start to taste the same anyways. One breweries overly hoppy IPA is just like any other.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

Huh. It's funny you should mention that, because my beer-hipster buddy was over last night, and he brought a pack of THE hoppiest IPAs I have ever tasted.

It was like they let Apple Bloom take over the cider business.

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

So they allowed Hoppy Bloom to take over the beer business?
I like microbrews, but there aren't any that really stand out. You go to a new city, try the local brew, some are good some bad. I do still mark for Sweetwater 420 though. It's the Atlanta brew. I still have some love for that poorly planned city.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-28

All of my beer-hipster friends are marking for Treehouse, which is near Springfield. Treehouse absolutely dominates the BeerAdvocate charts, so they're actually making a tidy profit by selling and trading Treehouse stuff to fellow beer-hipsters all over the world.

They also really like New England Brewing Company, which is in CT.

To replace a stadium that opened less than 25 years ago.

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

That's old. Stadiums need to be replaced every 15 years to ensure you get to host Superbowls and Wrestlemanias. Stadiums have shorter lives than most cars.

jangbones - 2016-08-28

do NOT get me started on how pro sports leagues have absolutely extorted millions with the stadium scam

Cena_mark - 2016-08-28

“Every stadium that is made, every football launched, every coach fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This nation in sports is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of sports, it is humanity hanging on a cross of pigskin.” - jangbones

jangbones - 2016-08-29

pretty close

memedumpster - 2016-08-28

I like it.

Callamon - 2016-08-29

Each piece slides a single direction on one track and it's a lot lighter having so many pieces it should work great.

Redford - 2016-08-29

To me, this was indistinguishable from a Dahir Insaat pitch.
