You know, Bill, when I hear that some guy has shot themselves, their spouses or friends, or the family dog "cleaning their gun" I just assume that means he did something monumentally stupid and so this is the story he is sticking to.
A buddy of mine was in the military for a while. He told me about a particularly dumb Boss he had who one day had to take time off because he shot himself in the foot, he claimed, while cleaning his gun in his apartment.
Everyone under his command was pretty sure what really happened was that he was playing quickdraw in the mirror.
I recall reading a story recently about a guy who shot his wife. He was inside the house, and wanted to run an antenna from his TV to the roof. So he used his gun to shoot a hole in the wall in order to run the cable through. His wife happened to be on the other side of the wall outside gardening. That was a major cleaning fault.
I'd think that you'd be a lot more likely to encounter a bolt action rifle randomly than a G3 or FAL. He should have shown how to unload a .22 with a tube magazine because that could be genuinely weird for a novice and there's tons of those rifles out there.
