OK, waiting for the former military POETVier who knows wtf happened?

Bullet got stuck in the chamber, bolt didn't clear it like it should have, bullet ended up cooking off in the hot barrel. Since the bolt was open, some of the force (or shrapnel) blew back.

Usually in training you're supposed to let the thing cool for 5 minutes when this happens before opening it, for this exact reason.

Thank you. So does this only usually happen when the gun is hot after heavy fire? So what do you do when this happens in the field? Serious question.

Nominal - 2022-01-02

Pretty much.

In combat? Depends how badly they need the gun to keep firing. Bad enough, and they just have to risk it.

Thanks again. I remember about 18 years ago, there was a show where they talked about some Marines in Afghanistan and they were in a nasty firefight. And their heavy fire man was manning the similar weapon, and they were under such pressure that that same machine gun nearly burned out the barrel because they were under such pressure to put out a suppressing fire. Like the breech wasn't spitting out ammo back into the operator's face, but the barrel was glowing hot and was starting to break down - like, melting and glowing in the night, and giving away their position.

Anyway, this video made me think about that and those Americans and some of them like my college buddy who never came home.

....oops, meant as a reply to Nominal and My's conversation.
