Humans are just the worst.

I’m actively avoiding disposable plastic containers as much as possible because of shit like this (pun intended)

Yeah, we're doing this too in my house. We got some of those canvas produce bags and canvas grocery bags that don't have any synthetic materials in them.

We could go back to putting Coke in glass bottles and maybe just washing and reusing them, but, like, that'd be sort of annoying? Also gross? Ew.

An old guy that I used to work with told me a story about growing up in the 1950s in a steel mill town in Pennsylvania, and how there would be these huge mounds of some kind of dirty, sooty byproduct leftover from making the steel; just mountains of it covering acres behind the mills. His brother and him would play on these mounds, slide down them etc. and come home pitch black from head to toe. But then one day somebody developed a process to make use of this byproduct for some other kind of metal refining process, so it suddenly became worth a few pennies a ton, and before he knew it all those mountains were just gone.

That's what will happen with the plastic. It's made out of petroleum, so it has value. We just don't know how to extract it yet. But in our lifetimes that pacific garbage patch, and all the shit in the landfills, will become worth a few bucks per ton and it will all get collected.

That or some bacteria will either be created or figure out for itself how to process microplastics into something more benign.

I think it was in The Sheep Look Up where that bacteria exists and a side effect is everybody's car tires disintegrated within months.

Did any of these morons think to stop feeding it plastic?
