The floating timeline of the Simpsons is strange. Moving the timeline can work for some aspects of the show's history, such as what decade Homer first met Marge, but it no longer makes sense to have Grandpa as a WWII vet and Skinner as a Vietnam vet. At some point they'll need to change the wars those guys served in.

In the 1993 episode I Love Lisa, Skinner has a flashback to the Battle of The Sanh which occurred in 1968. So in a little more than two years, the War in Afghanistan would be the appropriate war for Skinner, chronologically speaking.
