...although, to be fair, it seems that LOTS of fast-food managers across the U.S. were fooled by this particular prank-caller.

Innocent Bystander - 2007-09-27

So it's not that bad since it was some guy on the phone who told them to do it?

Stopheles - 2007-09-27

No, it's in some ways even more faith-in-humanity-shattering, though the Milgram Experiment already proved that people are willing to do a LOT if they're told to by a vague authority figure that they can't actually see.

Stopheles - 2007-09-27

The "to be fair" thing was to explain that maybe this woman isn't THE SINGLE MOST incredibly stupid fast-food manager out there (as there seem to have been a lot of others willing to go almost as far).

Innocent Bystander - 2007-09-27

I'm just wondering how in the fuck the guy didn't refuse to spank her or make her blow him. Unless he was into it and I suspect he was. I mean blind obedience to authority etc blahblahblah but this is the back room of a McDonald's, not fucking Auschwitz.

Stopheles - 2007-09-27

See, he was into it on some level, but the fact that he was being TOLD to make her do it absolved him of responsibility for the abuse. Or so he thought with his reptile brain at the time.

Innocent Bystander - 2007-09-27

I guess so. It's funny how easy it is to persuade people into accepting authority. And by funny I mean abhorringly, soul-crushingly disgusting.

I read the wikipedia entry on the Milgram experiment. Brought back fond memories of watching a video of that jail experiment. My faith in humankind is crushed for the rest of the day.

And if you're tracing biological things to this stuff, I'd say it has more to do with primitive pack behaviour, I don't think it goes all the way down to the limbic system. I base this theory on nothing at all.

Innocent Bystander - 2007-09-27

Sorry, can't let this go for some reason. Here's this things wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strip_Search_Prank_Call_Scam#Inve stigation_and_aftermath

First of all they arrested a man who probably did it but the jury found him not guilty. Yippee.

Second thing. A lot of the guy's behaviour was attributed to the Foot-in-the door effect ("individuals seem to consider the reasonableness of a request based on what they have already done, rather than on a more objective standard"). So the man on the phone started his request simple and resonable and then gradually got crazier. But Wes here walked in as the girl was already stripped naked. How did he not think something was wrong then?

coprolalia - 2007-09-27

Of course, it helps that most fast food managers are the scum of the goddamned earth.

dead_cat - 2007-09-28

From the Wiki article: "The victim, Louise Ogborn, is suing McDonald's for 0 million for failing to protect her during her ordeal.[5] The civil trial is scheduled to begin Monday, September 10, 2007. The victim is represented by well known Louisville attorney, Ann B. Oldfather[1]."

It's a bit late for me to go hunting for info on this tonight, but I hope the poor kid wins it. Jesus Christ.

Stopheles - 2007-09-28

http://hummingbunny.wordpress.com/2007/09/10/louise-ogborn-civil-t rial/

This is a blog entry that keeps getting updated to include links to the most current local-news articles about the trial.

It's a really bizarre trial, and McDonald's REALLY doesn't look very good in this.

Today's article includes this bit of repulsive info:

'During more than three hours of cross-examination, [regional training executive Kent] Kramer acknowledged that nobody at McDonald's ever told him about dozens of hoaxes that it knew had plagued its restaurants and franchisees, even though he was in charge of training at McDonald's 85 Louisville-area restaurants, including the Mount Washington store.

In fact, he said, he didn't know about Ogborn's ordeal until he saw an "ABC Primetime" report on the hoaxes a year and a half after the Bullitt County incident.'

dead_cat - 2007-09-28

A little more from Hummingbunny blog:

"Which brings me to the crux of the matter as to why I and so many others are so incensed by this case. From the beginning McDonalds has steadfastly denied ANY responsibility for Louis’s alleged ‘injuries’. They have even stated that Louise was responsible for her assault and rape and was even in on the hoax call to get money.

1. This was a company owned restaurant.
2. McDonalds knew that these hoax calls from someone claiming to be the police had been occurring for ten years.
3. Louise was strip searched illegally by McDonalds managers in the manager’s office against her will and was prevented from leaving.
4. Louise’s clothes, purse and keys were taken from her and locked in a vehicle in the parking lot.
5. Donna Summer asked Walter Nix to ‘watch’ Louise and do what the caller said and then failed to protect Louise from him.
6. It is a violation of McDonalds policy to have a non-employee in the office.
7. McDonalds training manual said nothing about the calls nor that strip searches are illegal for any reason.
8. Donna Summer, a McDonalds paid manager failed to call her District manager until after Walter Nix had raped Louise and then gone home and did so only after another employee was directed by the caller to look at Louise naked.
9. He refused to do so after 25 minutes with Louise and the caller then hung up.
10. The real police were called much later and Nix was arrested.
11. The company falsified Louise’s time card to make it seem she was still punched-in.
12. Company lawyers made-up bogus and misleading witness statements.
13. Supervisors attempted to destroy the surveillance tape of Louise’s ordeal."

...there aren't enough happy kitten videos in the fucking WORLD...

Bone_Vulture - 2007-09-27

This is just too damn sad and stupid to be anything but crushingly depressing.

Wombles - 2010-09-02

It's important in equal proportion to its horror. One obvious lesson is obedience to authority - ANY authority - without reason.

love - 2007-09-27

This is just too damn sad and stupid to be anything but a new reality show.

Billy Buttsex - 2007-09-27

Put the manager in jail.

bongoprophet - 2007-09-27

no... no... no..... how? how?!

Stopheles - 2007-09-27

It made me almost punch my monitor when they showed the manager footage of her entering the room before her fiancee (who I hope isn't her fiancee anymore) could throw the apron to the poor girl, and her lawyer could be heard telling the reporter that the manager wouldn't comment on the fact that she saw what was going on but did nothing.

Innocent Bystander - 2007-09-27

What in the name of fuck??? And it keeps getting worse and worse and worse.

I can't give this a rating.

Cap'n Profan!ty - 2007-09-27

NineEleven - 2007-09-27

I like to think the caller is some kind of evil sadistic genius who coul d convince you to choke yourself if he wanted

Smellvin - 2007-09-27

Or everyone else involved was too damn stupid to question anything.

Rabid Vegan - 2007-09-27

This has got to be some sort of satire. Jesus.

PurpleXVI - 2007-09-27

So does anyone have the follow-up for this which seems to exist? I am disgustingly curious to know how this fucking saga ends.

Stopheles - 2007-09-27

Read the article I posted a link to in my first comment. The story is bizarre.

EvilHomer - 2007-09-27

I don't know whether that's the most amazing story ever, or the most awful. Probably both.

I mean, prank calling a store and convincing one of the mangers that an employee is wanted for theft, OK, I can see that happening. Getting the manager to strip search the employee? Weeeellllllll... maybe in New Jersey. But then it just keeps going. A fucking BLOWJOB?!?! Damn. Milgram tag, indeed.

EvilHomer - 2007-09-27

Although it should be pointed out that by that point, I doubt the fiance was going to complain. Fat, balding, middle aged man, with a horse-faced future wife and a naked 18 year old "criminal" on his lap? He already thought the guy on the phone was a cop, so I'm not surprised the fucking pervert didn't think to stop.

Stog - 2007-09-27

"Shake loose anything she might be hiding", huh?

I'm not going to give this a rating. This video makes me too goddamned angry to think straight.

jihadbaby - 2007-09-27

Damn that kid was fucking stupid.

Sudan no1 - 2007-09-27

troll. :(

jihadbaby - 2007-09-27

I'm not trolling. And I'm not saying "HURF DURF SHE DESERVES WHAT SHE GOT".
Obviously these are monstruous people, but jesus christ, it's not like a Cop or FBI agent was asking her to take off her clothes, it was someone from McDonalds. I still have enough faith in today's teenagers to believe that most others exposed to a similar situation wouldn't comply.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the implications of that would be really really depressing.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2007-09-27

Obviously she wasn't a "typical teen". She seems the type who's lived a simple, closeted, church-going life, and who's been taught to take orders from adults and that's the end of that. I can then understand how she might be intimidated by these people and a supposed officer on the phone, and be too embarrassed to do anything else but comply.

Horrifically Depressing. 5 stars.

Wombles - 2010-09-02

Yeah she was stupid, but that is normal and acceptable - she's a teenager. The woman who took the call and the man who followed the orders are FAR stupider and don't have the excuse of being naive or terrified like she did.

Aubrey McFate - 2007-09-27

Ugh. I got nothing to say.

x - 2007-09-27

That manager wanted to believe that little Miss Perfect was guilty.

x - 2007-09-28

That ASSISTANT manager.

Derrida - 2007-09-27

I always thought this was the most clever phone prank ever, but I guess I had imagined that it would be embarrassed managers doing the stripsearches, rather than creepy rapists.

Roachbud - 2007-09-27

Where does the investigation lead and who will it point to? TV programer bastards

joyofdiscord - 2007-09-27

Absolutely evil. Should be required viewing. Respect for authority should be fucking TABOO in today's world. Conscience is the only authority. Vigilantism is the only enforcer.

K Clobber - 2007-11-15

Yeah, what a bunch of assholes. I would feel safer if people could be convicted on general suspicion.

K Clobber - 2007-11-15

fuck me. i tried to respond to themarstravolta.

TheMarsTravolta - 2007-09-27

A investigation led to the conviction of David Stewart, a corrections officer in Florida. A calling card was found in his home that was used to dial a Burger King store which was also pranked.
However, his defense lawyer stated that you couldn't PROVE that he made the calls in Kentucky, and even the Burger King in question, and thus the jury found him NOT GUILTY.

Another experiment that the Milgram Experiment is linked to is the Stanford Prison Experiment:

BBC produced a show recreating the Stanford Prison Experiment, but I can't find it anywhere on youtube.

EvilHomer - 2007-09-27

Not sure about the BBC show.

Xiphias - 2007-09-27

glasseye - 2007-09-27

Holy fuck, that's... fucked.

Spider Jerusalem - 2007-09-27

Do they not teach kids how to say "no" anymore? Jesus Christ, what kind of simp just complies with those kind of orders from a goddamn fast-food manager?

TheQuakeSoldier - 2007-09-27

No, in some places they don't. And this is the price.

revdrew - 2007-09-27

I want to punch that dumb cunt of manager in the face until my hand breaks.

"In court papers, McDonald's also has blamed Ogborn for what happened to her — saying that her injuries, "if any," were caused by her failure to realize the caller wasn't a real police officer."

I don't think I'm going to be eating at McDonald's for awhile. Not that I really need this for a reason.

Spike Jonez - 2007-09-27

The depths of human stupidity will never cease to amaze me.

coprolalia - 2007-09-27

Thing is, you know she was too intimidated by this fat scumbag, stuck in this small room and afraid of losing her job, to say no. And a guy like that is just waiting, every day, to get a call where someone gives him an excuse to strip and spank a teenager.

Sean Robinson - 2007-09-28

Not often that video taped footage that of a rape is shown on a national news network.

This is so fucking pathetic and repellant.

dead_cat - 2007-09-28

On a degree of 1-5, that's how wide my jaw dropped at this. Mother of fuck, that is evil.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2007-09-28

That would be a horrifying thing to go through for anyone working there. Think about it, most of those people were just working a regular shift unaware that their little friend was being tortured and raped in just a room away by that vicious lying cunt and her rapist boyfriend.

I hope they both go to prison and get batons shoved up their holes.

Quad9Damage - 2007-09-28

I'm torn between giving this five stars for making me sick, or one star for making me sick. 5 out of 5 for utter evil, not quality.

dead_cat - 2007-09-29

http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070928 /ZONE10/709290302

McDonalds claims the trauma of the ordeal helped Ogden grow as a person. At least they seem to have stopped saying she was in "cahoots" with the hoaxer.

Quad9Damage - 2007-09-29

I don't understand how this bitch can continue to blatantly LIE despite a video tape being played RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER contradicting her every word. If the surveillance video had sound, I'll bet her constant replies of "I don't recall" would be even less convincing.

magical man - 2007-09-30

Aubrey McFate - 2007-10-01

Oh fuck you sideways.

Stopheles - 2007-10-05

http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2007 1005/ZONE10/71005021

She got .1 million -- not the 0 million she'd sought in the civil case, but still a victory.

rhythm rider - 2007-10-07

what the fuck, the manager cunt won a settlement against McDonalds too?? she should be in jail damnit

theFlu - 2007-10-16

As far as I'm concerned, all parties - including the victim - are guilty. The manager is an imbecile, and should be held accountable - especially after the girl's pleas, and when she walked in where the "victim" was nude.
The guy, for obviously sexually assaulting the girl...
And, lastly, the "victim" for being so weak / playing along, for the 6.1 mil. lawsuit.

IrishWhiskey - 2010-05-11

I agree, 18 years old girls who cry and beg while being raped by older authority figures are totally to blame. If they really didn't want to be raped, they would fight back more. Its their fault for being weak.

Oh, and also: Fuck off and die you worthless shit-stain.

Wombles - 2010-09-02

Yeah seriously; I picked up some high school girl and told her to fucking get naked and suck me off or else and I get sued? WTF

K Clobber - 2007-11-15

does anyone have a link to the uncensored video?

Olaf the Unspeakable - 2007-12-28

Take your fetishes elsewhere, thanks

King of Balls - 2008-11-27

Wow. The ultimate social engineering achievement, I guess?
