Haven't these people heard of suicide?
|
Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-06-09 I was thinking that exact same thought around the time the woman apologizes for all of the shitty equipment she is given.
|
MrBuddy - 2009-06-10 From what I've read the suicide rate in North Korea is staggering.

I like how Kim Jong Il as a child is depicted in full immaculate military uniform (plus wet sneakers apparently)
They would probably get shot for referring to him as 'Lil Kim.

Fascist dictatorships make for the greatest visuals!

On the plus side, they treat their women better than the Saudis.
|
kelpfoot - 2009-06-09 Besides the perpetual threat imprisonment, starvation and ruin, I mean.

And this is the side they show to the cameras
|
allcaps - 2009-06-12 It's Al Jazeera. They want sympathy.

Gojira1000 - 2009-06-09
....
In the end, when it comes for North Korea, will they all drink the FlavorAde? Will some number just plain require killing? Or will we discover that a large percentage of the population was desperately faking it in a Brazil-esque way?
(+1 star for Al-Jazeera having some of the best documentaries)

"Snow grenades" :-(
|
Toenails - 2009-06-09 Oh come now, you never pretended that a snowball was a grenade when you threw it? Making an explosion sound and everything?
Now if he said played something line "Snow Landmines" then yeah, that would be another story.

I'm surprised they allowed someone to film this. Does NK think this makes them look good?

ahh such exciting and dynamic department meetings! everyone seems so free to speak their minds or "outside of the box" thinking
|
TeenerTot - 2009-06-09 I'm sure they could say anything they wanted. If they prefaced it with "Due to the evil imperialism of America..."

Trading free thought for ceremony and symbols.
Works for religion, too.

The Great Leader loves you so much children that he lets you go without food or power so he can spend all your money on missiles and nuclear weapons.

I congratulate the people of North Korea for their dedication to historic hairstyle preservation.

It must be nice to just blame all your fuckups on the isolationist policies of imperialist countries and have everyone agree by default.

And remember that in China similar scenes are involved in the manufacture of your Levis.
|
Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-06-09 Yes but in China, people are free to look for whatever employment they can get now. They are free to explore social mobility, and they have this little thing called food.

An actual dystopia ruled by an ancient-style god king and we are their Oceania. My dad fought in the Korean War, so the scene with the grandpa explaining his time in it was surreal.
|
zatojones - 2009-06-10 The modern version of North Korea history seems to omit the small fact that the there were forces other than the United States involved in the conflict.
|
thirteen3seven - 2009-06-09
Wow. I knew what to expect after reading "Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea," but actually seeing it is still mind-blowing.
Those buses (and I use the plural with hesitation) are the only vehicles on the road.
|
allcaps - 2009-06-15 I understand that the trains are staged too. No one ever sees more than the fancy two stations. Even the passengers are speculated to be staged. (Remember, this woman would have been handpicked, and constantly monitored.) The rest of the system doesn't appear to operate, at least at the moment. I saw pictures online where some German guy got away from his tour group for a quick dash into another station. It was a broken down wreck, completely inoperative.

twinkieafternoon - 2009-06-09
The entire video I kept betting my brother that any complaints would begin with, "Due to the imperialist evil of America..." or something of that ilk. I was right more than half of the time, and it was funny.
And then they blamed America for a power shortage. And then the woman blamed herself for the equipment she was given. And then I just felt sad.

What the devil is that woman at 5:12 doing?
