I've always been fairly certain that Tolkien based Gandalf on Bertrand Russell, but that's just a theory.
Like alot of other elements of Lord of the Rings you'll find something very British inhabiting the trappings of Norse motifs or environments. But I never thought about Russel being Gandalf. Nice. Gandalf would be an Oxonian don mixed with the hermit/sage vector of the Odin character from Norse mythology.
