Cheese - 2009-12-29
Ralph hired me straight outta animation school to write gags and storyboard this new project he had. We were locked in a room together for a month while I tried over and over to come up with jokes he liked. Eventually he started liking things and I finished the project with the promise to do the second in the series. I never heard from him again. A few years later I heard the short aired on the What A Cartoon show along with a second. I tracked them down through some friends at Nick and finally saw the finished project. Holy Shit it's terrible! The reason I was never brought back for the second short, which I'll post in a second, is because he stole one of my characters (the Batman ripoff) and produced the whole thing around that character. That one might be the better of the two as I'm pretty sure Ralph did it all himself.

Cheese - 2009-12-29 Oh, everyone in the animation industry from that era has a Bakshi story.

Holy shit. I don't know how to rate your pain.

I should mention, I'm not POed about this. It was 15 years ago in a career I no longer work in, now it's kind of a badge of honor.

So wait, I'm confused - you're upset that Bakshi stole the idea of ripping off Batman from you?
|
Cheese - 2009-12-29 I'm not upset about any of it.
|
poorwill - 2009-12-29 It was pretty clear he used 'Batman ripoff' to get across how dismissve he was of his own role in the production. Especially when you consider that the character isn't actually a batman ripoff.

Holy crap I remember seeing these years back when I used to watch Cartoon Network pretty much all day. I remember for the time I was astounded at how shitty these shorts were, even for Bakshi.
|
Xenocide - 2009-12-29 The funny thing about the What a Cartoon pilots is that the worst ones came from established animators who were big names in the industry. The best shorts all came from unknowns. It may not have been CN's intention but they really showed a clear passing of the torch to a new generation with these things.

1994? Really? I can't imagine why you bothered working on this. By 1994, it was clear that all non-anime was inferior to anime.

Cheese, you and Bakshi have produced a work so strange and truly autistic that you have achieved the ideal of anti-art. Across the gulf of centuries, the Dadaists are applauding slowly.
Seriously though, neat story, goddamn awful cartoon. The voice of the clown alone displays a deep, deep hatred of humanity.

Bitter with a side of Rice - 2009-12-30 Well, decades, not centuries.
I have to admit I'm not old enough to have caught Bakshi in his heyday. For those that have, did he ever produce anything that wasn't an ugly, confused piece of shit?
|
Chalkdust - 2009-12-30 Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures is probably the best thing Bakshi's name is on

You misspelled "Malcolm," Ralph.

I AM THE CHEESE. I AM THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE FILM. I AM BETTER THAN THE SALAMI AND THE BOLOGNA, COMBINED!!!
Seriously, though, it's pretty cool that you were fresh out of animation school and ended up collaborating with someone pretty famous on a project that actually aired on TV. Sucks that it happened to be with someone batshit nuts, at the end of his career, and that he stole shit from you.
Also that it ended up being your own personal "Wacky Delly."
